■Mt. Mokoto Trekking
Mt. Mokoto with its altitude of 1,000 meters is a gentle mountain for trekking. There are two trekking routes: “Mt. Mokoto course” and “Koshimizu course.”
〔Mt. Mokoto course〕
A trekking route on Higashimokoto side. Make a turn at a signboard, “Entrance to Mt. Mokoto Trekking,” on Hokkaido Prefectural Road 102 (Abashiri-Kawayu line) to go to the trekking entrance. You can go up to the trekking entrance (the 6th station) by car. From there, it’s approximately 2 kilometers to the mountaintop. It takes about 1 hour even with children walking slowly. You may be greeted by black woodpeckers and Ezoshimarisu (Hokkaido chipmunks) on the way. Around the 8th station, a spring of the famed clear water, “Ginryosui,” welcomes you and relives your thirst. Then, you will soon reach the top.
A trekking route on Koshimizu side. The trekking entrance is located in the parking lot of the lookout restaurant “Highland Koshimizu 725” on Hokkaido Prefectural Road 102. As the name suggests, the starting point is at 725 meters above sea level, and it takes about 1 hour to the mountaintop of 1,000 meters in altitude. The trekking course along the ridge is relatively gentle. After passing the peak at 940 meters, you will pass by Byobuiwa (a sheer cliff). From there, it doesn’t take long to reach the top.
